Celebrating First Nations Culture

Indigenous Art Exhibitions

Location: Araluen Cultural Precinct & Community Galleries
Entry: FREE for all exhibitions

Regular exhibitions featuring:

  • Central Desert Art: Traditional and contemporary dot painting, watercolors
  • Local Aboriginal Artists: Showcasing Arrernte, Warlpiri, and Anmatyerre artists
  • Indigenous Photography: Documenting culture and country
  • Sculpture & Installation: Contemporary Indigenous art
  • Youth Indigenous Art: Quarterly exhibitions of young Indigenous artists

Cultural Workshops

Learn from Indigenous elders and artists:

  • Dot Painting Workshops: Saturdays 10am-12pm ($35 includes materials)
  • Bush Tucker Tours: Monthly guided tours learning about native foods
  • Didgeridoo Lessons: Thursdays 6-7pm ($20 per session)
  • Traditional Weaving: First Sunday each month (FREE)
  • Arrernte Language Classes: Wednesdays 5:30-7pm (FREE)
  • Storytelling Sessions: Monthly Dreamtime stories with elders

NAIDOC Week Celebrations

When: First week of July annually
Duration: 7 days of celebrations

Week-long program including:

  • Flag raising ceremony and Welcome to Country
  • Indigenous art market with 50+ artists
  • Cultural performances and traditional dance
  • Bush tucker demonstrations and tastings
  • Family fun day with activities for children
  • Community concert featuring Indigenous musicians
  • Film screenings of Indigenous stories

Indigenous Artist Support Program

  • Grants up to $5,000 for Indigenous artists
  • Professional development workshops
  • Exhibition opportunities at council venues
  • Artist residencies (2-4 weeks with stipend)
  • Mentoring by established artists

Beginner Art Classes

  • Drawing Fundamentals: Tuesdays 6-8pm, 8-week course, $120
  • Painting Basics: Wednesdays 10am-12pm, 8-week course, $140 (materials included)
  • Watercolour Techniques: Thursdays 2-4pm, 6-week course, $100
  • Acrylic Painting: Saturdays 9am-12pm, 8-week course, $150

Advanced & Specialized

  • Portrait Drawing: Mondays 6-8pm, 6-week course, $110
  • Landscape Painting: Fridays 9am-12pm, outdoor sessions, $130
  • Abstract & Contemporary: Thursdays 6-8:30pm, 6-week course, $120
  • Life Drawing: Alternate Wednesdays 7-9pm, $15 per session

Sculpture & 3D Arts

  • Ceramics & Pottery: Mondays & Wednesdays 10am-1pm, $180 per term
  • Sculpture Workshop: Saturdays 1-4pm, various materials, $150 per term
  • Textile Art: Tuesdays 1-3pm, weaving and fiber arts, $100 per term

Open Studio Program

When: Daily 9am-9pm
Cost: $10 per day or $50 per month membership

  • Access to fully equipped art studio
  • Painting, drawing, and sculpture facilities
  • Ceramics studio with kiln access

  • Materials available for purchase

  • Productions: 3 major shows per year (March, July, November)
  • Auditions: Open to all community members
  • Workshops: Acting, directing, stage production skills

  • Youth Theatre: Separate program for ages 8-18

Music Programs

Community Choir

  • When: Thursdays 7-9pm
  • Cost: $80 per term (includes music)
  • Style: Contemporary, classical, and Indigenous songs
  • Performances: Quarterly concerts, community events
  • No audition required - all voices welcome

Concerts in the Park

  • When: Last Sunday of each month (Apr-Oct)
  • Time: 4-7pm
  • Location: Anzac Hill Amphitheatre
  • Entry: FREE
  • Features: Local bands, food vendors, family activities

  • 30-minute private lessons: $35
  • Group lessons (3-5 students): $20 per person
  • Subsidized lessons for concession card holders
  • Instrument loan program available

Dance Programs

  • Contemporary Dance: Mondays 6-7:30pm, ages 16+, $15 per class
  • Ballet Classes: Wednesdays 4-5pm (children), 5:30-7pm (adults)
  • Cultural Dance: Indigenous and multicultural dance, Saturdays 2-3:30pm
  • Hip Hop & Street Dance: Fridays 5-6:30pm, ages 12-18
  • Ballroom Dancing: Thursdays 7:30-9pm, beginner-friendly

When: September 2026
Categories: Singing, Dance, Instrumental, Comedy, Other

  • Age divisions: Under 12, 12-18, 18+
  • $1,000 grand prize plus category winners
  • Auditions in August
  • Finals night gala performance

Public Art Program

Public Art Installations

Council commissions and maintains public art throughout Gibson Desert:

  • Annual budget: $150,000 for new public art
  • Current installations: 45+ artworks across the municipality
  • Priority: 50% of commissions for Indigenous artists
  • Locations: Parks, streetscapes, civic buildings, roundabouts

Mural Program

Transforming blank walls into vibrant community art:

  • Applications open for mural proposals
  • Council provides walls, materials, and artist fees
  • Community consultation for designs
  • 10 new murals planned for 2026
  • Youth artist opportunities available

Adopt-a-Utility-Box

Artists can transform utility boxes into artworks:

  • Apply to paint traffic signal boxes, electrical boxes
  • Artist receives $500 fee plus materials
  • 25 boxes available annually
  • Design approval required

Sculpture Trail

Self-guided walking tour of outdoor sculptures:

  • 12 sculpture installations across parks and reserves
  • FREE guided tours: First Saturday each month, 9am
  • Downloadable map and audio guide
  • Rotating temporary sculptures (6-month displays)
