Indigenous Art Exhibitions
Location: Araluen Cultural Precinct & Community Galleries
Entry: FREE for all exhibitions
Regular exhibitions featuring:
- Central Desert Art: Traditional and contemporary dot painting, watercolors
- Local Aboriginal Artists: Showcasing Arrernte, Warlpiri, and Anmatyerre artists
- Indigenous Photography: Documenting culture and country
- Sculpture & Installation: Contemporary Indigenous art
- Youth Indigenous Art: Quarterly exhibitions of young Indigenous artists

Learn from Indigenous elders and artists:
- Dot Painting Workshops: Saturdays 10am-12pm ($35 includes materials)
- Bush Tucker Tours: Monthly guided tours learning about native foods
- Didgeridoo Lessons: Thursdays 6-7pm ($20 per session)
- Traditional Weaving: First Sunday each month (FREE)
- Arrernte Language Classes: Wednesdays 5:30-7pm (FREE)
- Storytelling Sessions: Monthly Dreamtime stories with elders
NAIDOC Week Celebrations
When: First week of July annually
Duration: 7 days of celebrations
Week-long program including:
- Flag raising ceremony and Welcome to Country
- Indigenous art market with 50+ artists
- Cultural performances and traditional dance
- Bush tucker demonstrations and tastings
- Family fun day with activities for children
- Community concert featuring Indigenous musicians
- Film screenings of Indigenous stories
Indigenous Artist Support Program
- Grants up to $5,000 for Indigenous artists

Council commissions and maintains public art throughout Gibson Desert:
- Annual budget: $150,000 for new public art
- Current installations: 45+ artworks across the municipality
- Priority: 50% of commissions for Indigenous artists

Mural Program
Transforming blank walls into vibrant community art:
- Applications open for mural proposals
- Council provides walls, materials, and artist fees
- Community consultation for designs
- 10 new murals planned for 2026

Adopt-a-Utility-Box
Artists can transform utility boxes into artworks:
- Apply to paint traffic signal boxes, electrical boxes
- Artist receives $500 fee plus materials
- 25 boxes available annually
- Design approval required
Sculpture Trail
Self-guided walking tour of outdoor sculptures:
- 12 sculpture installations across parks and reserves
